Convicts & Cold Fronts: Cracking the Clearwater Sheepshead Code

If you’ve been in Clearwater the last two weeks, you know the Gulf hasn't exactly been "tropical." We’ve been dealing with a wild stretch of weather, giant temperature drops down into the mid-30s and high winds that have stirred up the Gulf and killed our water visibility.

While many boats are staying tied to the dock, We have been finding great success by pivoting our tactics. When the mercury drops, we head for the "protected" water.

The Winter Targets: Sheepshead & Black Drum

While some species go dormant when the water chills, Sheepshead and Black Drum are a different breed. These fish are much hardier and less affected by the cold. In fact, this is their time to shine!

We’ve been finding a crazy Sheepshead bite lately. These "convicts" are stacked up, and we’ve been pulling plenty of nice Black Drum out of the same holes.

Where We’re Finding Them

With the high winds ruining the visibility on the open flats and offshore, we’ve shifted our focus to:

  • Deep-water docks

  • Protected cuts

  • Residential canals

These areas provide the structure and thermal cover these fish need when a cold front slams the coast.

Captain Mason’s go to Rig

To get these fish to commit in 35-degree weather, you have to be precise. Here is exactly how we’ve been rigging up to put our clients on the meat:

  • Bait: Live or fresh dead shrimp.

  • The Rig: A 2/0 circle hook tied to a 25lb fluorocarbon leader.

  • The Weight: A simple split shot placed roughly 6 inches above the hook.

The Secret to the Bite: "The Pitch"

The tactic right now is all about accuracy. I tell my clients: The further you can get that bait under the dock or structure, the better your odds. These fish aren't roaming right now; they are tucked tight against the pilings. You have to "pitch" it right into their living room. Once the bait settles, it’s a waiting game. If you're patient and stay tight to the structure, the bite has been consistent and heavy.

Don't let the cold weather keep you off the water. The winter bite is officially ON!
